Feng Shui Research
As part of the Feng Shui Society’s professional standards development we are looking at setting up research projects and studies into feng shui. We think that research is an important part of a professional organisation, and it is part of our dedication to ongoing improvement.
Areas of Feng Shui Research
Academic research into feng shui encompasses a diverse range of topics, bridging disciplines such as environmental psychology, architecture, cultural studies, geography and philosophy such as metaphysics. The following key areas have been explored:
- Case Studies: Empirical research examining the real-world applications of feng shui principles in residential, commercial, and urban planning contexts. These studies often analyse changes in human well-being, productivity, and environmental harmony before and after feng shui adjustments (Mak & So, 2015; Wang & Purnell, 2019).
- A Description of Feng Shui: Scholarly works providing historical and conceptual overviews of feng shui as a practice, tracing its origins from ancient China to its contemporary global adaptations. Researchers such as Bruun (2008) and Han (2018) have explored the evolution of feng shui within different cultural contexts.
- An Understanding and Explanation of How Feng Shui Works: Studies attempting to rationalise feng shui principles using scientific frameworks, such as cognitive and perceptual psychology, environmental influences on human behaviour, and neuroaesthetics. For instance, Lip (1997) discusses how spatial arrangements influence psychological well-being.
- An Evaluation of Different Feng Shui Schools and Methods: Comparative analyses of various feng shui schools, including Form School, Compass School, and Modern/Intuitive Feng Shui. Research examines their theoretical foundations, practical applications, and perceived effectiveness (He & Luo, 2019; Yoon, 2006).
- Applications of Feng Shui: Interdisciplinary research on how feng shui is applied in urban design, green architecture, and workplace productivity. Recent studies have explored its role in sustainable design and biophilic architecture (Ma & Fu, 2020; Cheng & Kong, 2013).
- ‘Not Only Proof’ – Alternative Ways of Looking at Feng Shui: Beyond empirical validation, research considers philosophical, phenomenological, and heuristic perspectives on feng shui, acknowledging its role in cultural identity, holistic health, and subjective experience (Zang, 2014). This approach aligns with the epistemological shift from positivist validation to pluralistic interpretations.
Current Research into Feng Shui
There are currently numerous scientific papers on feng shui (see some references below) and many more that reference or are related to feng shui. We hope to start publishing such papers in due course. Read more about feng shui research and how to get involved
If you are interested in being involved in feng shui research, or have ideas for research projects, or know of any research or scientific studies or papers related to feng shui, please contact the FSS
If you’ve done a consultation or a feng shui intervention in your home or workplace and you’ve had a result, or have insights into feng shui – we’d love to hear it – share your case study or insights here.
