Celebrating 31 Years of Feng Shui Society 🎂
Dear Feng Shui Enthusiasts and Consultants
On the evening of the 9th November 1993, in the heart of London, a small but dedicated group of us — myself, Gina Lazenby, Jan Cisek, Mark Beakhouse, and Graham Gunn — gathered at my home at 11 Bentinck Mews, London W1U 2AW. There, we founded the Feng Shui Society (FSS). Sometime before this day, I attended a feng shui workshop with William Spear, organised by Simon Brown at the East-West Center in Old Street, London. This experience deeply inspired me to establish a community of like-minded individuals who could share and grow together in the practice of feng shui. Fast forward 31 years, and today, the FSS proudly stands as the world’s oldest professional feng shui organisation.
Since our inception, we have fostered a community of feng shui enthusiasts and consultants, with most of our members based in the UK, but our network is open to anyone, anywhere in the world. If you are a feng shui consultant or a student of feng shui, we warmly invite you to join our society and become an accredited feng shui consultant. The strength of the FSS lies not only in our collective knowledge but in the credibility, support, and community we offer to our members.
Reflecting on the Journey
Feng shui has been an intrinsic part of my life, a guiding compass that has shaped not only my career but also my perspective on the world. Founding the FSS and later establishing the Feng Shui Network International have been remarkable opportunities to help promote and grow the practice of feng shui across borders and generations. I am incredibly grateful for every moment of this journey, the people I have met, and the transformations I have witnessed through the art and philosophy of feng shui. ☯️
As we mark this 31st anniversary, it’s astonishing to realise just how much the world has changed. The past three decades have brought not only technological advancements but also significant shifts in how we relate to our homes and workspaces. Feng shui is as relevant now as it was then, perhaps even more so, as people search for meaningful connections to the environments in which they live and work. At the FSS, we continuously evolve our understanding and practice of feng shui to reflect these changes, adapting to modern needs while staying true to timeless principles.
Our Celebrations — How We’re Marking 31 Years
Birthdays are special times to reflect, give thanks, and sow seeds for the future — quite literally, in Jan’s case! To honour this milestone, Janwill be celebrating by planting 31 ginkgo biloba trees from nuts collected in Chelsea, London. Ginkgo biloba is a symbol of resilience and longevity — fitting attributes for both feng shui and the FSS. This tree species first appeared over 290 million years ago and has survived everything from the ice age to the atomic bomb in Hiroshima. The ginkgo’s enduring vitality is also a beautiful metaphor for our continued journey with feng shui, reflecting our goal of creating environments, despite any challenges, that sustain, uplift and affirm life.
Gina Lazenby(Chair): I’ll be celebrating with gratitude, reaching out to thank everyone who has played a part in the society’s journey and reconnecting with my own feng shui practice at home. I plan to spend the day revisiting some of the foundational texts and concepts of feng shui that first inspired me, looking at the feng shui books I have written — as well as sharing these insights with our wider community.
Jan Cisek(Accreditation & Online): I will also be dedicating some time to his PhD research on feng shui (conducted at Liverpool John Moores University), which delves into feng shui as both a personal and transpersonal discipline. My research aims to provide practical implications for wellness, sleep quality at home, and productivity in the workplace. If you’d like to participate in this evolving research, you can join in this online feng shui study: Exploring Bedroom and Workplace Design Preferences (Online Study) Every contribution brings us a step closer to a deeper understanding of the power of feng shui.
Jackie Tyrrell(Membership): I will celebrate by deeply connecting with my new home and applying essential feng shui principles to create a harmonious and supportive environment for myself and my family. I recently shared my experiences of moving home in an FSS talk, offering valuable insights into the feng shui process of moving and settling into a new space.
Alexandra Berthault (Newsletter): I will be celebrating with Tibetan sounds throughout her house, bringing in the New through fresh flower bouquets in my living room and kitchen, and also enhancing the feng shui with special crystal placements to create an even more harmonious and nurturing atmosphere.
Victoria Michaelides (Webinars & Online Events): This week has been a wonderful lead-up to celebrating the FSS birthday. To inspire the next generation, I have been introducing the concept of feng shui to children as early as possible. We were even featured in our school newsletter, encouraging children to wear colours that make them feel positive and energised. Throughout the week, the children have been learning about the importance of their environment and how it influences their well-being. Together with my acupuncture peers and Qigong friends, I am also celebrating by decorating a large treatment clinic in Reading, bringing harmony and joy to the space!
Narinder Chopra (Treasurer): I will play golf with feng shui principles in mind, focusing on aligning with natural energy flows, selecting courses that have positive chi, and using intentional breathing and visualisation techniques to enhance balance and focus. I hopes my handicap will benefit from all this good energy – though I admit that even positive chi might struggle against my slice! 😊
Annick Buiron (Admin): I’m going to perform a space clearing of my boat, where I live, moored in the heart of Paris’s Seine, in preparation for the sale of it.
