The art of Feng Shui

Chinese people usually use the age-old idiom "wielding the axe before Lu Ban (an ancient master carpenter)" to make fun of the people who are mediocre but desire to display his so-called learning or skill in the presence of an expert.

China is a country where feng shui - traditional Chinese practice of determining the location of structures, rooms, furniture and tombs, supposed to have a vital bearing on the fortune of families, owners and users - originated in ancient times.

There exist a large number of well-trained feng shui masters and their books dealing with such an age-old skill.

As a result, foreigners must be, in the eyes of some Chinese people, ignorant laymen who are just like the commonplace apprentices excessively boasting about their abilities before their master.

However, Dana Elraviv, an Israeli woman and feng shui practitioner, seems to be an exception and widely considered by many natives to be a professional.

"She is very professional and I have got a lot of help from her lectures on feng shui. Just like me, so many other feng shui believers also think highly of her wide knowledge of feng shui," said Wang Dong, a feng shui believer.

For an expat, getting a good command of this Chinese skill is not easy and it is of worthy praise, according to Wang.

Living in an apartment in the north eastern part of Beijing, Dana Elraviv runs a company named "A Matter of Chi" in order to help people with the feng shui theories.

According to China's feng shui theories, chi means vital energy and plays a major role in influencing a person's daily life.

"My job is to use the art of adjusting chi to give personal benefit to ordinary persons, no matter whether they are Chinese or foreigners," said Dana.

In addition to making a series of lectures on the rudiments of feng shui, she is also busy interviewing her clients all day long and giving them her suggestions about interior design according to feng shui theories.

"My suggestions are extensive, including the location and colour of furniture in their apartments, as well as choosing respective suitable rooms for different family members," she said.

Dana said she met some Chinese people who were suspicious of her ability at first simply because she is a foreigner. However, almost all of them got rid of the bias later on and became her clients.

"My mother is just once case in point," said Wang Dong.

Wang and his family members come from South of China where feng shui is very trendy and popular and Wang's mother has accumulated a wide knowledge about it.

After buying an apartment, Wang invited Dana to come to his place in order to solicit her suggestions on interior design.

After checking the exposures of all the rooms, Dana put forward her advice instantly. While listening to what Dana said, Wang's mother kept nodding.

Finally, the knowledgeable mother said to her son nothing but: "She knows a lot about feng shui and what she says completely conforms to the theories I know. She is an expert."

Dana recalls that why she got in touch with feng shui about 12 years ago is just a coincidence.

At that time, she worked for a real estate company in Israel and took charge of helping patrons find their suitable houses.

One day, a Chinese diplomat came to her company, asking Dana to help him find a good apartment.

Dana led him into an apartment, which was quite nice according to Israeli standards. She thought it would be easy for them to make a deal.

Contrary to her expectation, the Chinese diplomat refused to buy the apartment and joked that its feng shui was not good enough.

"Before that, I had never heard of feng shui. He put the seeds of feng shui in my mind. The failure of the business ignited my curiosity to understand feng shui. Shortly after going home, I turned on my computer and collected materials on it through the Internet," Dana recollected.

In addition, Dana spent one and a half years learning feng shui in Israel later on. Because her major at the university was interior design; she decided to combine the two subjects.

Dana said helping customers choose the perfect interior design style is challenging because she must be very creative during the process of putting forth different solutions.

After collecting all the background information of a client through her detailed questionnaire, she always takes all his or her qualities into consideration. During the process, Dana always keeps close ties with the client.

"The whole process is interactive rather than an arbitrary order. So I don't think feng shui is superstitious," Dana emphasized.

"I can always find a proper solution for people who want to use feng shui theories to improve their lives although it is complicated to do so."
